The HP Switch v2 zl Modules are the second generation zl modules and provide a variety of improved network connectivity options for any of the HP E5400 zl or E8200 zl switches.

Compatibility Mode allows the inter-operation of v2 zl modules with the older zl modules in the same chassis switch. When in Compatibility Mode, the switch accepts either v2 zl or zl modules. The default is Compatibility Mode enabled. If Compatibility Mode is disabled by executing the “no allow-v1-modules” command, the switch will only power up v2 zl modules. For more information refer to the “Enhancement titled ‘Compatibility Mode’ in the latest Release Notes for your switch”.

Line interface modules:

  • The 24-port 10/100/1000-T module has PoE standard (J8702A).

  • The 20-port 10/100/1000T-PoE + 4 mini-GBIC module (J8705A) can be used in those circumstances where fiber connections are needed as downlinks to other switches at a distance, or as switch-to-switch connections. They can be trunked to provide up to 4 gigabits of connectivity. Port trunks, or LAG, can operate across multiple modules to increase redundancy as well.

  • The 4-port 10GbE X2 module (J8707A).

  • The 24-port mini-GBIC module (J8706A) can be used as an aggregator in a distribution environment.

  • The 4-port 10GbE CX-4 module (J8708A) can be used as a low-cost 10G interconnect between two switches in a closet or data center, or to provide high-speed downlinks to another switch supporting CX4 connections. The CX-4 ports support in-line power for media converters used for longer haul fiber connectivity.

Power supplies:

The switch 8212zl supports two power supplies:

  • 875 W. This power supply (J8712A) provides 600 W chassis power and 273 W PoE power. This supply runs on 110 V @ 15 A or 230 V @ 10 A.

  • 1500 W. This power supply (J8712B) provides 600 W chassis power and 900 W PoE power. This supply runs on 200-240 V @ 10 A.

PoE power from the supplies is additive when configured as auto-failover power. Both power supplies can be in the same chassis simultaneously. Maximum power on any PoE port is 15.4 W, although most PoE clients use about 7-10 W. The switch will direct only the power needed to each port.
